Today I was discussing with a very good friend of mine Lavinia, the colours that people wear. Lavinia is studying Fashion Design and is originally from Romania, but she has stayed in India for a few years, and is familiar with the colours pallets of clothes in India. When suddenly the conversation moved to the colour black and its opposite white. While white is worn by the Bride in her wedding here in UK but mostly in India white colour is worn by people in a Funeral or a Cremation ceremony. I feel that the ideology behind wearing white colour is the same both in West and in East. White colour is considered a symbol of purity and peace. While in West the Bride wears it on her wedding to show her purity to her partner, the people in India wear it to have pure and clean thoughts. The bride in UK wants a peaceful married life, while the loved ones of the deceased want him/her to have a peaceful afterlife.
I think that all colours affect the core human emotions similarly all over the world, more or less. But its the cultures who have adopted this property of colour to their own advantage. While Black is a very neat colour, it looks very corporate. Its good to wear in cold weather as it remains warm. But in India, traditionally its considered a colour of the Devil.
How does any particular colour influence you culturally?
